Abraham van Calraet

Abraham van Calraet,
1642 Dordrecht - 1722 Amsterdam

ICE FUNSTIONS ON A POLDER SEA OIL

on wood. Parquet flooring.
42.5 x 67 cm.
Signature in the lower centre on a piece of beam.
Frame with artist's name plate.

On an emphatically wide picture format the painter has lined up several persons on the ice almost side by side, shaded by the hazy backlight. The cloudy sky high up, the horizon with church building shows the vastness of the snow-covered lake. The main figures at the front are composed in groups: on the right a man tying up his skates, on the left a gentleman in a feathered hat who seems to be greeting two women, in the centre a strong man with an ice stick gliding unsteadily on the ice, in front of a skater who has fallen to the ground. Further back several staffage figures with ice sledges.

Calraet was a student of the two painters Samuel and Aemilius Hup, who also worked as sculptors in Dordrecht. It is assumed that he was a student of Aelbert Cuyp (1620-1691). Due to the similarity of the monogram to Cuyp, Calraet's paintings were often attributed to Cuyp, which the art historian Abraham Bredius was able to correct for the first time.(1241731) (11)
