Achille Emile Othon Friesz (French, 1879-1949) Paysage sous la neige, 1919 Oil on canvas 32 x 25-1x4 inches (81.3 x 64.1 cm) Signed and dated lower right: E. Othon Friesz x 1919 PROVENANCE: Private collection, East Coast. LITERATURE: R. Martin and O. Aittouarès, Émile Othon Friesz. L'oeuvre peint, Paris, 1995, vol. 1, p. 134, no. 306, illustrated in black and white. Friesz painted this rugged landscape in Hauteville-Lompnes in the Jura mountains of eastern France when he accompanied his wife to a sanatorium there in 1919. He was inspired by the deep forests, mountains and snowfalls in the same part of the world that had fueled the vision of Courbet.

Condition Report: Unlined canvas. A vertical line of paint, unclear if original, in lower right corner, affecting the 'r' in the last name of signature. Flaking and loss to the emerald green pigment in the center of the right trunk of foremost tree at right. Uneven discoloration to the varnish layer. A few scattered small dots of discolored accretion. A very few faint scuffs. Sparse, finely patterned craquelure. Apparent retouching to upper right corner. Not examined out of frame.
Under UV: varnish fluoresces green unevenly. Aforementioned retouching in upper right corner fluoresces. Diagonal line of retouching in upper left quadrant. Apparent strengthening applied to one of the branches of the primary tree in upper left quadrant. Brushy circular area of retouching to the stone wall in lower left quadrant. Some modern pigments fluoresce.
