French school of the 19th century for this oil on canvas measuring 38 cm x 61 cm representing a flock of sheep probably on the heights of the Jura. It is signed lower left.
The paint is fresh and solid although it has numerous fine cracks, somewhat aesthetic marks of the passage of time. The canvas has been restored (visible on the back) and has a very small hole at the top right.
A student of Charles Nestor Bavoux at the Besançon School of Drawing, Achille Gros is part of the movement of the Franche-Comté School following Courbet, then Bavoux, Fanart and Isenbart, his contemporaries.
He became a professor at the Dole School of Drawing (Jura) then curator of the city's Museum of Fine Arts from 1889 to 1911.
He exhibited at the Salon from 1888, and won gold medals in Nancy, Lyon, Besançon, Langres and Dijon. The Besançon Museum of Fine Arts has his works
