Action Comics #36 (DC, 1941) CGC FN- 5.5 Off-white pages. We don't know if it gets any more classic comic-booky than this Fred Ray cover of Superman smashing some robots. Unfortunately, there are no robots -- or robot-punching -- inside this issue. Hitting newsstands in April, though, kids disappointed by the lack of robo-destruction didn't have to wait long: the animated short The Mechanical Monsters hit the big screen that November. Did this cover inspire the short? Maybe. It's more likely that the story "The Bandit Robots of Metropolis," which ran in the Superman newspaper strip a year earlier, helped plant the idea. Regardless of who inspired whom, images of the Man of Steel mangling some steel would become a hallmark of the character. Story art by Bernard Baily and Wayne Boring. Overstreet 2026 FN 6.0 value = $1,233. CGC census 10/26: 10 in 5.5, 40 higher. HID09710052018 © 2026 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
