The clay itself represents Africa’s cracked desert earth while the gold sheen implies the majesty and pride of African culture. In ‘Transfiguration,’ Shulman specifically drew the adorning vertical stripes to symbolize African wildlife and the oppression inflicted on the continent throughout history.
