Adama Kouyaté (1928-2020) - Bébé au studio
Adama Kouyaté, born in 1928 in Bougouni, in the Sikasso region and died on February 14, 2020, is a Malian photographer.
In 1944, he went to Bamako in search of work. Two years later, he began learning photography under the orders of Bakary Doumbia, studio photographer. Entering the Photo Hall Soudanais, Mali's first photography laboratory, it didn't take long for him to earn his stripes. He created the Photo Hall Kati in the town of Kati, not far from Bamako. In 1964 he left for Ouagadougou and opened the Photo Hall Voltaïque there before returning to settle in Mali in 1968 in the town of Ségou. Like Malick Sidibé, or Seydou Keita (photographer) , Adama Kouyaté is part of this generation of Malian photographers who were able to capture the atmosphere of Malian society, just after independence.
Work exhibited as part of the Rencontres de la Photographie in Arles in 2022.
