Adolf le Comte (1850-1921 - Oude Schipper

[ translate ]

Rare painting by Adolf Le Comte (1850-1921) with a beautiful and special composition of an old skipper in the cockpit of his ship near the tiller. In the background are two other fishing vessels from Arnemuiden (the abbreviation ARM on the sail stood for Arnemuiden, a fishing town in Zeeland) and a cabin boy can also be seen at work.
The painting was probably painted by Adolf le Comte in Vlissingen, as this was an alternate port for the Arnemuiden fishing fleet (shrimp fishing) after Arnemuiden lost its connection to the sea in 1872 due to the damming of the Sloe. The Rijksmuseum contains several chalk drawings/sketches that he made in Vlissingen and the surrounding area.

The painting is in good condition, but unfortunately someone once shortened the panel slightly to make it fit the frame it is currently in. As a result, part of the signature has also disappeared. See also the photos for the condition. Painting is loose in the frame.
Despite this, it is a very rare painting with a composition that I have not seen before by Adolf Le Comte.
The painting also gives a beautiful picture of the shrimp fishermen from Arnemuiden and the hierarchy within the crew. The skipper was sitting at the tiller of the barge and did not participate in the catch. He usually employed three men and a boy, who were generally family members.

Adolf le Comte
Dutch artist and teacher at the Polytechnic School in Delft, August 30, 1850 Geestbrug (Rijswijk) - January 3, 1921 The Hague) .

Le Comte played a fundamental role in the revival of the Delft pottery industry. He was also important for the development of Dutch profane, decorative glass painting.

Le Comte attended arts and crafts schools in Karlsruhe and Nuremberg and at the Polytechnic School in Delft. After his education, he worked for a while as a decorator in Paris. Around 1880, Le Comte joined the De Porceleyne Fles pottery factory in Delft as a designer, where he continued to work until his death. He became the artistic director of the factory. In that position he made, among other things, the striking tile plateau of the courtyard of Vrouwe Groenevelt's Liefdegesticht.
At the faculty of architecture of the Polytechnic School, he played a decisive role in the field of architectural decorative arts and other applied arts. Adolf le Comte also taught painters such as Jan Toorop, Harm Kamerlingh Onnes and W. B. Tholen.
Le Comte was friends with the glazier Jan Schouten and the art collector Lambert van Meerten. Together with Schouten, Le Comte played an important role in the creation of the Delft Museum Lambert van Meerten. In 1909, Le Comte became the first director of this museum.

The painting will be carefully packaged and sent by registered mail.
