[ translate ]

(German American, 1870-1952)

Narcissus, 1923, signed at base "A.A. Weinman Sc.", stamped at bottom with foundry mark "Roman Bronze Works Inc.", bronze, 43 x 39 x 25 in.

Provenance: Robert Bahssin, Post Road Gallery, Larchmont, New York; From the Collection of Rob and Jane Hicklin

Note: Adolph Alexander Weinman’s Narcissus was originally modeled in 1923 and exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1926, where it was awarded the Widener Gold Medal. The present bronze was commissioned by Weinman from the Roman Bronze Works in 1948. A letter written by the artist to his wife that same year refers to a Narcissus "at our garden pool," providing a contemporary reference to the sculpture and its place within the artist's personal environment.

The present work is one of four known examples of Narcissus. Two examples, one in bronze and one in marble, are in the collection of Brookgreen Gardens, Murrells Inlet, South Carolina; another bronze is in the collection of the Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, Florida. The existence of these documented examples underscores the continued importance of Narcissus within Weinman’s sculptural oeuvre.
