The original version of this painting, the portrait of Jan de Dood by Adriaen Brouwer, is in the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. The present painting shows the sitter with the unusually high hat inverted, as in the engraving after Brouwer by Cornelis Visscher.

Provenance

Kunsthandlung Gebr. Douwes, Amsterdam, 1928. – Vor Januar 1929 Kunsthandlung Jacques Goudstikker, Amsterdam (Nr. 2190 im Black Book von Jacques Goudstikker). – Juli 1940 Übernahme der Galerie und Bestände der Galerie Goudstikker durch Hermann Göring und Alois Miedl. – Im November 2021 restituiert an die Erben nach Jaques Goudstikker.
