Adriaen de Gryef - Hunting dogs with their trophies
Adriaen de Gryef
Hunting dogs with their trophies
Oil on canvas. 141 x 135 cm.
An anecdote from 18th-century art literature recounts that Adriaen de Gryef made a bet with a carpenter that he could paint a large-scale hunting still life more quickly than the carpenter could make the stretcher frame required for it. Both set to work at the same time. De Gryef painted directly onto the loosely stretched canvas and won the bet: By the time the carpenter had finished the stretcher frame, the painting was already complete and could be mounted immediately (cf. J. C. Weyerman: *De levens-beschryvingen der Nederlandsche konst-schilders en konst-schilderessen, met een uytbreyding over de schilder-konst der ouden*, Vol. 4, Blussé en Zoon, 1769, pp. 92-94).
