\Artist: Adriaen van de Velde (1636-1672)
Technique: Oil on canvas\Signature: Hand signed\Dimensions: 49_57_5_cm
The Dutch artist Adriaen van de Velde (1636-1672) specialized in landscapes and beach scenes, but he also painted animal pieces, portraits and Biblical scenes. Adriaen van de Velde was baptized on November 30, 1636 and died on January 21, 1672 in Amsterdam. He was only 35 years old. The artist Adriaen started painting at a young age and that is not surprising, because he was the son of Willem van de Velde the Elder (1611-1693) and a brother of Willem van de Velde the Younger (1633-1707) . Adriaen van de Velde was apprenticed to the landscape painter Jan Wynants. There he met the artist Philips Wouwerman, who excelled in animal studies. This Wouwerman would have had a major influence on Adriaen's development. Van de Velde made rapid progress, as he was allowed to add figures to his master's landscapes. He would later also do this for Jan van der Heyden, Meindert Hobbema, Jacob van Ruisdael and other landscape painters. Van de Velde was regularly asked to enliven the cityscapes and landscapes of his contemporaries. The artwork shows a scene that was very personal to the artist, shepherds with resting cattle in a leafy environment. The painting is signed lower right: A. van de Velde F(fecit) . The signature is easier to read with the eye than we can capture with the photo. The signature remains well under UV light. Dimensions of the canvas: 35 x 42. 5 cm The work is framed in a handmade ornamental frame. The painting is of private origin. The stretcher is authentic, the canvas has been professionally covered a long time ago. There are some old scattered retouches in the canvas. The work is otherwise in good condition. Viewing of the painting is possible during opening hours of the art dealership or by appointment.
