As the scion of a Dutch family of painters, Adriana Johanna Haanen worked with her father Casparis in Utrecht together with her siblings Elisabeth Alida, Georg Gillis and Remigius Adrianus from 1816 to 1830. She later moved to Amsterdam, where she lived and worked together with Maria Vos as of the 1860s. Still lifes like the present work were part of her esteemed repertoire, with which she already achieved considerable prices during her lifetime.
