Like many successful theatre organists, he started by playing the church organ when quite a youngster, and was assistant organist at a Bamsley church when he was only eleven. By the time he was twelve he was teaching, and became a choir master when only sixteen. For years he played at, and broadcast from, the Forum Cinema, Southampton, and also the Guildhall, Southampton. His signature tune, ' Oh, Mr. Porter is one of the catchiest and most familiar introductions of this kind to be heard on the air.
