Herman Louis Cesar Teirlinck (1879-1967) was an award winning Belgian writer; his play Ik Dien premiered in Brussels in 1923 to critical success; the play was an adaptation of the 14th century poem Beatrijs / Beatrice about a nun who falls in love with a man and leaves her convent but returns fourteen years later to discover that Mary (the Mother of Jesus) has been acting in her place.
