[ translate ]

"Africae nova descriptio". 41:55 cm.

"This is one of the most decorative and popular of all the early maps of Africa" (Norwich). "It first appeared in an atlas in this second state in Blaeu's Atlantis Appendix of 1630" (Betz). Third state with Blaeu's name in the title cartouche changed to "Guiljelmo Blaeuw" and with additional hachuring around the sea monster (cf. Betz); publ. in Latin editions from 1640 onwards, our copy most probably from the Atlas Maior 1662 ff.: cut to neatline and mounted on broad-margined paper by the publisher (text on reverse with corresponding description and pagination "A 1-2"). - Orignal col. partly heightened with gold. Minor browning and spotting.

Betz 57.3; Norwich 32; Tooley, Africa S. 24 u. Taf. 7; Schilder/Stopp MCN IV, 36.4 u. Pag. "A 1-2"). - Gering gebräunt bzw. fleckig.
