African Baule Wood Slingshot Handles - Rooster + Figure

West Africa, Cote d'Ivoire, Baule, ca. 20th century CE. Pair of wooden slingshot handles, hand-powered projectile weapons, each hand-carved into the form of a figure, one anthropomorphic and the other resembling a rooster. Enveloped in vibrant red pigment, the rooster presents a closed, curved beak, a ridged crest, annular eyes, and a large wattle. Alternatively, the handle resembling a human displays huge, almond-shaped eyes, a petite nose, and a prominent hairline. Size of larger (rooster): 7" L x 4" W (17.8 cm x 10.2 cm)

Condition Report: Stable fissure on the front of rooster. Old loss to verso of figure's head. Chips and nicks to wood on both. Some rubbing and fading to pigment on rooster. Nice patina from age / use.
