African Spearheads, Knives & Sheaths 1900's

[ translate ]

The three (3) long spearheads were used for hunting fish and big game in the Central African Republic. One spearhead is 20 inches long with barbed sides that stick inside an animal and make it difficult to pull the spearhead out. The other two spearheads are also for big game hunting. One has wide tips and barbed sides and measures 19 in. long and 1 9/16 in. wide. The last one has a narrow base, rounded edges, and barbed sides, and measures 21 1/8 x 1 5/8 in. wide. Light rust on some pieces.

The two knives and sheaths come from the CAR as well. Each knife has a decorated sheath, and the larger knife with the bone handle was actually owned a Baptist minister during his missionary work in the country. He used the knife to cut open an animal's belly after the animal was killed. That knife sheath was also attached to a leather loop or armband worn above the elbow and gave the minister easy access to the knife. The bone-handled knife and sheath measure 13 3/8 in. long overall and the knife itself is 12 1/8 in. long. Some of the leather has dried out. The smaller knife and sheath measure 11 in. long overall, with light rust on the blade, and the armband measures about 2 7/8 in. wide. From the Dale Baker collection.
