African art Kwélé mask (No Reserve Price)

[ translate ]

Kwélé peoples are settled between the two rivers, Dja and Ivindo, in the border region between Gabon and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Kwélé masks embody the benevolent spirits of the forest, for this reason, they are characterized by their animal and human traits, combined or separate. The faces are dyed white using kaolin (white, crumbly clay) .
The white color of Kwélé masks evokes light, death and the fight against malevolent forces and spirits.

The eyes are very stylized, and have a very thin slit making it difficult for the dancers wearing them to see in front of them.
