The Property of the Detroit Institute of Arts, Sold to Benefit the Acquisition Fund

Handwritten note to verso reads: "This picture was in the possession of Dr. Hinde (lecturer at University College Hospital, London for more than 50 years). It was given as a wedding present to Mr. Hinde by one of the Colnaghi family. It was bought by Mr. Colnaghi in Florence. Sir Chas. Eastlake, Presid. Roy. Acad., who visited at Dr. Hinde's, believed it to be either a Correggio, or it was painted [. . .] Correggio's studio."

Surface grime; evidence of insect damage (verso); minor craquelure; evidence of paint loss from unsuccessful previous restoration (upper right corner, child's leg); under UV evidence of overall varnish and clouding. Framed: 13 3/8 x 10 1/4 inches.
