After Carlo Finelli, a Venetian model of Venus in a shell by Testolini, late 19th century
After Carlo Finelli (1782-1853), a Venetian sculpted alabaster model of Venus in a shell by Testolini, last quarter 19th century, the nude maiden portrayed crouching in a scallop shell supported by twin dolphins, the integral socle mounted with a plaque inscribed VENERE GALLERIA TESTOLINI VENEZIA, 59cm high
Condition Report:
The work bears the minor marks, knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age. A section of the upper right arm is missing, and a section of the shell on that side is broken, and there is a restoration to the other arm by the elbow. There is a fine dark line across the shell surrounding Venus, which may be an old crack but is stable. One of the toes is chipped, and there is some further chipping to some of the edges. There is another restoration to the lower left tip of the shell. The lowermost plinth is loose.
