After Daniel G. Elliot (American, 1835–1915), Lady Amherst Pheasant, c. 1950s Lithogravure
Daniel Giraud Elliot (American, 1835–1915) was a zoologist, ornithological author, and publisher whose large-format natural-history books paired scientific descriptions with commissioned illustrations by leading wildlife artists. He was a scientific founder of the American Museum of Natural History, where specimens from his personal bird collection became among the museum’s earliest holdings. His A Monograph of the Phasianidae, or Family of the Pheasants, published from 1870 to 1872, presented pheasant species through elaborate hand-colored lithographs created by artists including Joseph Wolf and Joseph Smith.
