This painting is after the monumental original by Gérard in the Palace of Versailles, Paris. The scene depicts Napoleon's decisive victory at the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805, a key moment in the Napoleonic Wars which ravaged Europe between 1803 and 1815. Gérard was a prominent painter in Napoleonic France, and in his capacity as a portrait painter depicted many important figures in contemporary society, including Napoleon himself.
