After Franz Von Stuck - Sculpture, anatomical figure - Écorché (1) - Bronze (patinated) - 20th century

[ translate ]

Sculpted from bronze, this type of anatomical figure showing the muscles without the skin is known as écorché. Anatomical figures were used to teach medical students anatomy as there was a shortage of bodies available for dissection as well as cultural and social taboos to be overcome. Preservation was also difficult. The figures were valued for their visual appeal and were often presented in stylised artistic poses. The base of the figure bears the signature Franz Von Stuck - though I have not been able to match the piece with any of his other sculptural works; this means it is likely not by his hand. Franz Von Stuck did study and sketch works of anatomy, illustrated a book on anatomy, and created sculptural works later in life. This piece likely is a work made and signed as homage. The decision is yours with further research then I have concluded. It is nevertheless an attractive well sculptured Verdi Gris bronze, with a beautiful patination throughout. Probably mid 20th century.
