After Leonardo da Vinci
Portrait of Lisa Gherardini (1479–1542), known as the Mona Lisa

signed and inscribed lower right: d'après LIONARDO de VINCI / ch. Jablonski
oil on canvas
unframed: 77 x 53.2 cm.; 30¼ x 21 in.
framed: 86.7 x 62.5 cm.; 34⅛ x 24⅝ in.

Condition Report:
The canvas is lined. The paint surface is relatively clean, but the varnish has become cloudy and uneven in parts. Evidence of two vertical drip marks, produced by liquid of some sort, can be noted towards the lower margin, but it is not clear if these have been produced by inconsistencies in the varnish or damage to the paint surface. A few paint losses can be noted towards the upper margin, perhaps caused by an old frame. Areas in which the paint is beginning to lift can be observed in a spot towards the centre, on the sitter’s neckline, and over her hands, towards the lower margin. These may relate to old, repaired tears in the canvas, or perhaps to scratches that have been filled in by retouchings. A handful of retouchings are visible to the naked eye: these can be found primarily covering these aforementioned spots of lifting, in a few spots towards the lower right corner, on the sitter’s chest, and on her face. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms these as retouchings, while revealing a few more in the sitter’s clothing, in a spot towards the upper right corner, in the landscape background to strengthen the darker tones, and in a vertical line towards the left margin, perhaps filling in another scratch or covering a small repaired tear. Overall, the painting is in fairly good condition.

Catalogue Note:
This is a nineteenth-century copy after the famous picture in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, by Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) of Lisa Gherardini (1479–1542), wife of Francesco del Giocondo (1465–1538).1

1 Inv. no. 779; oil on poplar panel, 79.4 x 53.4 cm.; Portrait of Lisa Gherardini, wife of Francesco del Giocondo, known as the Mona Lisa or Monna Lisa - Louvre Collections.
