A fortified bridge in a river landscape;
pen, ink, watercolour and wash on paper, 25.6 x 30.8 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present work is a high quality almost identical composition to the watercolour of the same subject by Sandby, of the same dimensions, which sold at Sotheby's, London, 20 September 2019, lot 598. It has been suggested that the fortified structure depicted in this drawing may represent a 'Peel Tower', which populate the frontier between England and Scotland. Sandby toured Scotland in the early 1750s.
