"Christ on the Cross." Oil on canvas, unsigned, depicting Jesus Christ on the cross with the widspept loincloth, the tilt of Christ's head and the scroll (titles) at the top of the cross against a dark, dramatic sky, in characteristic Baroque tenebrism (high contact between light and dark), though pierced spear wound shown on the right side instead of left side depicted by Rubens, framed in a heavy solid wood frame with gilt over red under-pigment finish, overall 36 ¾" x 25 ¾".

Jesus was stabbed in his side with a spear by a Roman soldier (traditionally named Longinus) while hanging on the cross.
The Scriptural Account: The Gospel of John (19:34) states that a soldier pierced Jesus' side with a spear to confirm he was already dead, causing blood and water to flow out. The Bible does not explicitly state whether it was the left or right side.

Condition: Good overall, relined and re-stretched in heavy bolted corners new stretcher, few old in-painting visible under UV light in the upper left side; frame with some wear and small losses..
