After Pierre-Jules Mene (French 1810-1894)
After Pierre-Jules Mene (French, 1810-1894), a patinated bronze animalier group of a whippet and a spaniel, naturalistically modelled, both portrayed standing, on an oval section base cast with a fan, signed to the maquette, 17cm high, 24.5cm wide
Provenance: Shefford Woodlands House, Berkshire
The proceeds of sale from this collection will be donated to a number of local charities.
Condition Report:
The bronze has a glossy dark brown patina, with lighter areas of a more warm, reddish colour to the exposed extremities, particularly the whippet's back. The whippet's tail has been restored near where it meets the body. There is also a small casting inconsistency to the rear (circa 0.5cm) and a circular plug (circa 0.3 cm) to the collar and another to the whippet's belly, also the result of the manufacture of the bronze. There are tiny light grey circular specks or marks, probably polish, dust or water marks, overall, which could presumably be easily addressed by a gentle clean. There is also dust in the recesses. Aside from the areas addressed, and minor marks, knocks and scuffs consistent with age, the bronze is in presentable condition.
