After Sir Anthony van Dyck
Portrait of James Stanley, 7th Earl of Derby (1607–1651)

oil on canvas, unframed
80 x 64.9 cm.; 31½ x 25½ in.

Condition Report:
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear. The painting presents well and retains areas of well preserved impasto in the sitter's armour. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals scattered retouching, notably in parts of the sitter's face and hair. An S-shaped line is visible in his cheek, possibly associated with an old sensitively-repaired tear. Other areas of retouching are visible in the right side of the sitter's armour. Further, small, scattered areas of retouching are visible in the background. The picture is in overall good condition.

Catalogue Note:
This work is based on Van Dyck's monumental full-length portrait of James Stanley, dated to circa 1636, in The Frick Collection, New York.1 The latter depicts the 7th Earl with his wife, Charlotte (1599–1664), and daughter, Henrietta Maria (1630–1685).

1 Inv. no. 1913.1.40; oil on canvas; 246.4 × 213.7 cm.; https://collections.frick.org/view/objects/asitem/items$0040:156

Provenance:
Probably Stanley Bligh Monck;

By whom sold ('The Property of Stanley Bligh Monck, Esq.'), London, Chrisite's, 19 June 1970, lot 97 (as after Van Dyck).
