After Sir Godfrey Kneller, Bt, British 1646-1723- Portrait of Joseph Addison (1672-1719); oil on canvas, 91.5 x 71 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The original Kit-Kat club portrait on canvas by Kneller, dating to c.1712, is housed in the National Portrait Gallery, London [NPG 3193]. The present work is in reverse, and was presumably taken after a printed copy of Kneller's portrait - see, for example, the mezzotint of Addison by John Simon (c.1675-1751), after Kneller, at the British Museum, London [1886,0609.15]. Addison was an essayist and joint founder, with Richard Steele, of 'The Spectator'. He was also a member of the Kitcat Club, the early 18th-century London club with strong political and literary associations.
Held in an English 18th-century carved, gilded and pierced frame. Please refer to department for condition report
