After Sir Joshua Reynolds, PRA,
British 1723-1792-
Self-Portrait;
oil on canvas, 41 x 30.3 cm. (unframed).
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
A near period reduced copy after the Self-Portrait painted by Reynolds in c.1775, and currently held in the Tate Collections [no.N00306]. The composition, coupled with the soft light revealing the dark colour palette employed by Reynolds, gesture towards the artist's attempt to emulate the works of the Dutch master Rembrandt (1606-1669), famed in particular for his atmospheric and enigmatic self-portraits. Reynolds produced a number of self-portraits, including one dating to 1775 in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence [no.1932], and a slightly looser version of the latter, held by the National Trust at Knole, Kent [no.129925].
