oil on canvas, bears old inscribed label 'Webster's "Dame School". Copied at National Gallery about 1890 (now at Tate Gallery.) Right corner unfinished... Ada Mary Howell' on the reverse of the stretcher, 62.7 x 121 cm.

The present work, painted in c.1890, is a copy after the original oil by Thomas Webster of similar dimensions, painted in 1845, and held in the collection of the Tate Galleries, UK [N00427]. The label verso suggests that the artist is Ada Mary Howell, a late 19th-century British painter based in Eastbourne, Sussex, who was better known for her miniature portraits.
