After William Redmore Bigg, RA, British 1755-1828- Black Monday, or the departure for school; and The return from school; oils on canvas, each 55.5 x 68.8 cm., two (2). Provenance: Purchased Christie’s, 1988, lot 69 (the first).; Private Collection, UK. Note: Chiefly known from their many engraved versions, the original oils by Bigg were exhibited at the Royal Academy, London in 1789 (no.214 ‘The return from school’ and no.275 ‘Black Monday, or the departure for school’). Bigg's greatest delight was in painting children and his pictures were highly popular in his day, with the best engravers used to render his work. A version of ‘Black Monday’ by Bigg, on metal, was offered at Christie’s, London, 29 June 2000, lot 124.
