Agnes Martin RCA, Canadian/American, 1912-2004- Paintings and Drawings, from the Stedelijk Museum Portfolio, 1990-91; the complete suite of ten lithographs on vellum, from the unnumbered edition of 2,500, printed by Lecturis, Eindhoven, published by Nemela & Lenzen GmbH, Monchengladback and Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, each sheet framed individually, with accompanying monograph, each sheet 30 x 30cm (framed) (10) Note: Agnes Martin, often described as a minimalist or abstract-expressionist, produced introspective works created with subdued colour pallets and a great emphasis on grids and lines. Martin’s experimental use of translucent paper as well as grey translucent paints give her works an ethereal character that reflect Martin’s interest in spirituality. The works here were made especially for the Stedelijk Museum Portfolio 1990-91, and feature Martin’s ‘reduced ink’ technique; none of the lines are pure black, and some are so light as to blend with the grey translucent paper, creating an array of tones. This series of works contain all the major elements found in Martin’s work, ‘they comprise a veritable catalogue’. Small irregularities in spacing or colouration in these works helps to create a tension, which can be heightened by variations in the rice paper surface. These works were Martin’s first experiment with such a deep grey colour, a character that lead to Martin calling them her ‘Black Paintings’, the grey is meant to absorb light, such that the paintings emanate a calming energy.
