Agostino Masucci (Rome circa 1691 - 1758)
Agostino Masucci (Rome circa 1691 - 1758)
The Holy Family with Saints
Oil on canvas
46 × 35 cm
The pyramidal arrangement of the figures, the three steps, and the sculptural, emphatic poses of the protagonists, elements derived from Masucci's training under Carlo Maratta and which became distinctive features of his painterly style, support the proposed attribution.
These recurring characteristics can be observed in several of Masucci's works, most notably in the Madonna with the Seven Founders of the Order of the Servants of Mary, 1727, preserved in the Church of San Marcello al Corso in Rome. In that painting, the figure of the Virgin occupies the apex of the triangular composition in a pose closely comparable to that of the Madonna in the present work. The same steps appear in the lower right corner, while the remaining figures follow a closely related compositional scheme.
