Ake Rittmark 1910–1987 SAL / Svenska Amerika Linien vintage poster
Caption Brief: "Cassandre's high-seas influence stretches to Sweden in this Ake Rittmark poster for the Swedish American Line, or SAL. Instead of calling upon seabirds or sailboats to stress the towering grandeur of the vessel, Rittmark uses nothing but the company's name, which—even though it appears in large letters—is dwarfed by the utter mass of the ship. The artist also uses a bit of stylized cubism in his design: isolating the vessel against a flat-black background, he plays with perspective in order to add a bit of additional curvature to the prow, affording us a more complete view of the ship" (The Art Deco Poster, Crouse, p. 237).
