Aksaray

Late 18th century, 206 x 148 cm, Central Anatolia, Konya region

Two huge octagons with hooked outlines, each filled to its full extent by a large central star, are aligned on the central axis of the red field. Two halved diamonds at the sides of the field and four triangles in the corners are similarly decorated with long hooks, creating a relationship with the two primary designs. The wide border is composed of two bands, an inner one of shield motifs on a white ground and an outer one of double hooks aligned in rows and placed in variously coloured compartments. Closely related examples are a Konya from the "Orient Stars" Collection identical in design, a Konya published by Battilossi and the Aksaray offered as lot 63 in this catalogue. – Small rewoven sections, partially restored sides, remains of the original kilim finishes survive at both ends.
