Al Capp (1909-1979)
Al Capp Lil' Abner Sunday Comic Strip dated 3-10-46 (United Feature Syndicate, 1946). Capp takes a satirical stand for Native American rights in this episode declaring tribal ownership of the "Yew-Nited States." Seems the ancient Polecat Tribe has never surrendered to U.S. authority. Lonesome Polecat, one of Capp's more prominent recurring characters, avers: "Polecats never give up!" Lonesome Polecat and his caveman pal, Hairless Joe, are shown preparing a vat of Kickapoo Joy Juice, a particularly noxious variety of moonshine. Capp caricatures himself (Panels 1-5) as a Washington bureaucrat. Lil' Abner was Capp's primary vehicle of ridicule for topical topics, social trends, and politics. (Title character Abner Yokum does not appear here.) As is typical for Al Capp, five tiers of art board have been taped together to form the composition. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with adhesive seams and spot-staining. Dimensions, 19" x 24.5", matted out to 22"x 27.75". Very Good condition. The matted area itself shows barked edges.
