Alan Davie CBE RA HRSW, Scottish 1920-2014 - Steps Opus 0.2327, 2010; oil on canvas, signed, titled and dated on the reverse 'Alan Davie Steps Opus 0.2327', 122 x 101.5 cm (ARR) Provenance: with Gimpel Fils, London GF13172 (according to the label attached to the reverse); private collection Note: Alan Davie was vitally important for modern art in Britain as he was one of the first artists to be affected by the American Abstract Expressionism after seeing Jackson Pollock's work in the 1940s. A jazz musician early in life, he incorporated the freedom and spontaneity of the genre into his work. Retrospectives of his work have been held at the Barbican Art Gallery, London (1993), and Tate St Ives (2003).
