Coming to Santa Fe from Brooklyn in 1985, Albert Handell was taken with the light and the colors of the Southwest landscape. He was one of the first plein-air artists to work with a full set of pastels on location. He works "en plein air" with pastels and does oil painting in his studio. In 1987 Handell was named to the Pastel Society of America's Hall of Fame and in 2000 he earned the first Lifetime Achievement Award from the Pastel Society of the West Coast.
