Albert-Joseph PENOT (1862-1930) A painter of gender and interiors, Albert Penot is a painter of the intimate, specialising in painting the female nude. He was a pupil of Gabriel Ferrier, a gold medal-winning genre painter and professor emeritus at the Beaux-Arts in Paris. A member of the Society of French Artists, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1909 where he won several awards (honourable mention in 1903, academic palms in 1906, third class medal in 1908) . He worked in Paris, living and working in his studio at 7, rue du Dôme. His wife, Marie Penot, was a corset-maker. He paints charming, coquettish and pleasant scenes. All his pictorial attention is on women, their clothes, their postures, their manners and their daily life. He paints them bathing, dining, strolling in the countryside, washing, napping or dressing. Albert Penot paints with delicacy and restraint, his gesture is fluid, his beauties are light, their contours are blurred.
