Albert LEBOURG (1849-1928)

Lebourg was a student of Gustave Morin, director of the municipal school of painting and drawing of Rouen.

Noticed by a collector in 1872, he offered him a position as a drawing teacher in Algeria where he taught until 1877, returning to Rouen in 1873 to get married. The art dealer Portier in Paris introduced him to new artistic circles.

Lebourg took classes in the workshop of Jean-Paul Laurens for two years. Having met Dr Paulin, he went with him to Auvergne in 1884 and stayed in Pont-du-Château the following year. In 1888, he settled in Puteaux. He made two stays between 1895 and 1897 in Holland. In 1902 he went to Saint-Gingolph in Switzerland. Owning a workshop on rue de Poissy in Paris, he stayed there until 1920 before returning to his home in Rouen where he fell ill. He stopped painting in 1925 and died in 1928 after a painful illness.

Lebourg participated twice in impressionist exhibitions in 1879 and 1880. Many Parisian art dealers exhibited his works: let us mention Antonio Mancini in 1896, Bernheim in 1899 and 1910, Rosenberg in 1903 and 1906. Lebourg was made Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1903. A member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, he participated in almost all of these Salons from 1891 to 1914. The most important exhibition devoted to him took place in 1918 in Paris at the Georges Petit gallery.
