A native New Yorker, Albert Lorenz received his undergraduate degree in 1965 from Pratt Institute and his masters in Architecture from Columbia University in 1969. He began his illustration career in 1970, working as a freelance artist for magazines before founding his own studio in 1971. Lorenz taught illustration at Pratt Institute for thirty years and retired as Distinguished Professor in 2004. He has received numerous honors including the Gold Medal from the Los Angeles Society of Illustrators for his book Metropolis: Ten Cities Ten Centuries.
This collage evolved from an unused commission depicting an aerial view of Manhattan, which the artist transformed by adding ornate, vividly colored Renaissance architecture rising dramatically from the modern cityscape. Surrounding the composition is an illustrated border that traces key historical events before, during, and after the Italian Renaissance, creating a richly layered juxtaposition of past and present.
