[ translate ]

(Stribach bei Lienz 1868–1926 St. Justina bei Bozen)
Kopf des zweiten Bauern aus dem „Totentanz“ (Head of the second peasant from the „Totentanz“), c. 1922, signed Egger Lienz, watercolour on paper, 39 x 33 cm, framed
Provenance:
Private Collection, South Tyrol
Private Collection, Austria (by descent from the above)

Exhibition:
Meraner Kunstverein, Meran (Stamp and note on the reverse board)

Compare:
Wilfried Kirschl, Albin Egger-Lienz. Das Gesamtwerk, Vienna–Munich 1996, vol. II, cat. rais. no. Z 299, ill. p. 595 and Z 477, ill. p. 611

Following 1920, Egger-Lienz executed watercolours of isolated motifs from his major compositions. In these drawings, his distinct genius for modeling form exclusively through the interplay of light and a monochromatic palette becomes apparent.

The head of the second peasant from the painting The Dance of Death represents a rare variant, unfolding a compelling, evocative aura by virtue of its direct gaze.
