Face of Christ with the Crown of Thorns

Dated 1510 lower left / Dürer's monogram.
Hardly any other Flemish master of his time executed the thorn-crowned face of Christ in close-up view and in a round format as frequently as Aelbert Bouts. These paintings are the direct model for the present small work. Aelbert was a son of the important painter Dierick Bouts the Elder and brother of Dierick Bouts the Younger. The Dürer monogram is a later addition.
A recent analysis report by the Laboratory for Art Technological Research at the Technical University of Cologne is available.
