The Life of the Virgin St Joachim and St Anne embracing each other underneath the Golden Gate Engraving with monogram 'AD' on the tablet bottom middle left. This is one of the infamous prints by Marcantonio of Albrecht Durer’s series of the Life of the Virgin, The Durer series date from 1503. As soon as 1505-1515 Marcantonio brought his engraved series on the market in Venice showing the monogram of Durer on his plates. This was leading towards the first counterfeit lawsuit in the history of art, prohibiting Marcantonio to show the AD monogram on his plates. Inventor: Albrecht Dürer ( 1471 - 1528) Reference: Bartsch / Le Peintre graveur (XIV. 406. 623) Same print in British Museum H,3. 164 Provenance: Collection D'Arenberg - Lugrt 567 The princes, then dukes of Arenberg have been, in Belgium, since the 16th century, among the greatest protectors of the arts. They have always shown themselves to be generous and enlightened Patrons. The mark is shows the coat of arms of the house of Arenberg: gules with 3 golden medlar flowers, 2 and 1, with the motto: “Christus Protector meus. ". Impression on laid paper. With plate border and mostly tread margins. Small paper defect bottom left corner. Measurements on plate border: 29,40 x 21,10 cm
