[LESSER, Aleksander] SKARBEK at Emperor Henry V’s Court (“Aurum ad aurum”)—a photographic reproduction of a painting by A. Lesser, [1860s–1870s]

Jan of Wawel Mountain on a diplomatic mission to Emperor Henry V, who was besieging Głogów in 1109. The origin of the “Skarbek” surname—the original is in the collection of the National Museum in Szczecin.

Photograph (albumen print) on original backing, size 10.2 x 6.4 cm (business card size), landscape orientation, with rounded corners. Photographic reproduction of the painting. Manufacturer unmarked. Discoloration (foxing) on the margins and reverse.

The composition corresponds to an episode described by Wincenty Kadłubek. In 1109, Emperor Henry V, wishing to intimidate Bolesław Krzywousty’s envoy, Skarbek of Góra, showed him his treasury. Skarbek threw a gold ring into the chest, saying “Aurum ad aurum” (“gold to gold”); tradition linked the emperor’s reply, “Habdank” (“thank you”), to the name of the Abdank coat of arms. A scene from the Polish-German War of 1109 (the defense of Głogów, Psie Pole) was a popular subject in 19th-century Polish painting and historical illustration.
