Alessandro Turchi gen. L'

[ translate ]

Alessandro Turchi gen. L'Orbetto (1578-1649), successor of the 17th century, allegory with Personifications of philosophy, history and prudence in awakening the human spirit in the desire for knowledge. On the left side of the composition stands the winged philosophy, which holds its traditional attributes of a scepter and a crown, while on the right stands wisdom with its usual mirror, which at the same time represents history with a book. In the middle stands the human being as the proverbial empty table, whose now-inflamed wisdom rises above his head as the knowledge fire of his mind. The small panel picture is in motif and style in the tradition of Turchi, an Italian painter of late Mannerism or early Baroque, who created comparable cabinet pieces on slate or marble with mythological and Christian themes. Oil / copper sheet, 34 x 19 cm, on the reverse old attribution to Hans Rottenhammer, ebonized frame with leg inlays 38.5 x 33.5 cm
