Alessio Issupoff - Viatka 1889 - Rome 1957, “Peasants” – Oil on panel, 30x50 cm - Alessio Issupoff, the Italianized name of Aleksey Vladimirovich Isupov, was a Russian painter born in Vyatka, now Kirov, on March 10, 1889, and who died in Rome on July 17, 1957. His work combines the Russian realist tradition with a luminous, Impressionist-style painting, developed largely in Italy. The son of an icon engraver and gilder, he received his early training from the artisans who worked with his father. He then studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture, where he was mentored by Apollinarij Vasnetsov and taught by Valentin Serov and Konstantin Korovin, graduating in 1912.Called to arms in 1915, he was stationed in Tashkent, and his exposure to Turkestan—particularly Samarkand—had a profound influence on his painting. Discharged in 1917, he settled in Samarkand, where he headed a committee for the preservation and restoration of monuments and painted markets, teahouses, and architectural scenes. Upon returning to Moscow in 1921, he faced a period of financial hardship. In 1926, he traveled to Italy for health reasons and remained there for the rest of his life. That same year, he held his first solo exhibition in Rome, followed by exhibitions in other Italian cities, and in 1930 he participated in the Venice Biennale, where he received an award that marked the pinnacle of his career. In Italy, he often painted pre-revolutionary Russia from memory, depicting birch trees, snow-covered landscapes, horses, sleds, and scenes of peasant life, as well as Italian landscapes reimagined in a Russian style. His painting is distinguished by broad brushstrokes, the primacy of color over line, and the delicacy of his color palette; he also developed a tempera-on-wood technique inspired by icons and Eastern miniatures. He died in Rome in 1957 and was buried in the non-Catholic cemetery in Testaccio. His works are housed at the Vyatka Art Museum, the Tretyakov Gallery, and in Italian and European collections.
