Alex Matisse (MA/NC, b. 1984), East Fork Pottery, Large Floor Vase

wood-fired alkaline glazed stoneware, the glaze highlighted by long dark vertical streaks. The vase has a long neck over a tooled throat, bulbous body terminating in a tooled band above the foot. Potter's signature glyph above the foot.
40 in.
Great-grandson of Henri Mattise, pottery artist Alex Maisse, is the co-founder of East Fork Pottery located in Madison County.

Alex apprenticed in the workshops of North Carolina potters Matt Jones and Mark Hewitt. In their workshops Alex gained an appreciation for the traditions of the Anglo-Oriental school of Leach, Hamada, and Cardew to the folk pottery of the south-eastern United States and many places between.
Alex describes his own work as “a fusion of pre-industrial country traditions in both process and material. It is fired in a large wood burning kiln and made of as many local materials as the chemistry will allow, while still affording me the physical attributes necessary for my aesthetic decisions.”
Private Collection, Virginia
Additional high-resolution photos are available at www.lelandlittle.com
Condition Report: Scrape to the glaze at the foot of 1 1/4 in. otherwise good.
