Alex R. Thomas & Co. Wood Fruit Crate
Crate: 19.5 x 12 x 9 inches. Jars: 7 inches tall. An agricultural shipping crate constructed from wooden slats and solid panels, assembled with nails. The crate was manufactured for the transport of pears and features three distinct types of branding. Both long sides are finished with black stenciled text that reads 14 followed by two diagonal slash marks and the words Premium Mountain Bartletts. The word Premium is rendered in a cursive script within a stylized banner graphic. One end panel features a printed multicolored paper lithograph label depicting a blue-toned mountain landscape with snow-covered coniferous trees. The label includes the text C & T PREMIUM, U.S. No. 1 Grade, MOUNTAIN BARTLETT PEARS, PRODUCE OF U.S.A., and CONTENTS 4/5 BUSHEL. Small print in the lower-left corner of this label identifies the packer as PACKED BY ALEX R. THOMAS & CO. UKIAH, CALIFORNIA. The opposite end panel is stenciled in blue ink with a circular logo for BLUE ANCHOR INC. and the text UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The interior is unfinished natural wood, showing two wide floor slats.
